Only what an order needs
12 kinds of information, each with a reason given below.
Never sold
Shared only with the 6 services listed below, and only the part each needs.
Optional cookies ask first
Anything optional stays off until you agree to it.
Who holds it
Uganda Bookshop, Plot 4 Colville Street, Kampala, Uganda. Write to help@ugandabookshop.com or call 0779 550 877 about anything on this page.
What we collect, and why
- Optional reading note, favourite genres and profile colour
- To personalise your private account page. These fields do not appear in public book reviews.
- Your name, phone number and email address
- To put the order together, to reach you about it, and to send the receipt.
- A delivery district, area and landmark, when you choose delivery
- So the rider can find you. Collection orders have no address at all.
- A note you add to an order
- So we can do what you asked: a gift message, a time to call, who will receive the books.
- A message you send us, a school book list, or a request for a book
- With the name and contact details you give, so the right person at the shop can answer you. Kept as the record of what you asked.
- Your email address, if you ask for your history quiz code by email
- To send you the code. A copy goes to the shop's staff so they know it was sent.
- What you ordered, what it cost and whether it is paid
- It is the order. We keep it as the record of a sale.
- An account email and password, if you make an account
- To sign you in. The password is stored as a hash, never as itself.
- A review you write, with the name on your account
- To show it beside the book, once a member of staff has approved it.
- Your email address, if you ask for the newsletter
- To send it. Every message has a link to stop.
- Which pages are opened, the site that sent you there, and whether it is a phone, tablet or computer
- To count visitors to the website. No cookie is used and nothing identifies you: your network address and browser are turned into a code that changes every day and cannot be traced back. The counts are kept for 13 months.
- Your network address, briefly, when you submit a form
- To stop the same machine submitting a thousand orders. It is deleted on a schedule.
We do not collect anything else, and we do not ask for information we have no use for. If you tick “Remember my details on this device” at checkout, your name, phone, email and area are kept in this browser only, to fill in the form next time; they reach us only when you place an order. Your card number and your Mobile Money PIN are entered on the payment provider's own page and never reach this website.
Who else sees it
Only the companies that help us complete an order, and only the part each of them needs.
Pesapal
Takes the payment
Your name, phone, email and the amount. Card and Mobile Money details are entered on their page and never reach this site.
Microsoft 365
Sends the shop's emails and carries its mailboxes
Your email address and what each email contains: receipts, order updates, quiz codes, and copies of messages you send through the site, which go to the shop's staff. Also anything you send to an address at the shop's domain.
Hostinger
Runs the server
Everything the site stores, as the host of the machine it is stored on.
Google Analytics
Counts visits, only if you accept analytics cookies
Which public pages were opened, roughly where from (country and city), and the device and browser. Names, contact details, search queries and referrers are not sent. Order numbers are masked in page addresses. The selected property retains event and user data for 14 months, with user retention reset on new activity; aggregated standard reports are not covered by that limit.
Google Maps
Shows the contact-page map automatically as it approaches your screen
Connection information, including your IP address, when the embedded map loads. Google may use its own cookies. The address and directions link remain available if the map cannot load.
Google
Sign in with Google, only if you use it
That you signed in. The shop receives your name and email from them.
We do not sell your information, and we do not pass it to anyone for advertising.
What you can ask for
- A copy of what we hold about you.
- A correction, if something is wrong.
- Deletion of your account and your saved details.
- An end to the newsletter, which every newsletter also links to.
Ask at help@ugandabookshop.com. We may keep a record of a completed sale even after deleting an account, because a shop has to be able to show what it sold.
Still to be confirmed
This page is not finished. The following are being confirmed by the shop and will be added here:
- The registered name of the business and its registration number
- Whether the shop is registered with Uganda's Personal Data Protection Office
- How long paid orders are kept before they are deleted
- Who pays the courier on a return
- Who to write to about data, if it is not the shop's own help address
