Our history
Nearly a century of books, knowledge and service
Uganda Bookshop is one of Uganda's oldest literary institutions. The story runs from a church printing press in 1925 to a shop on Colville Street that turns 100 on 14 May 2027. Walk through it a chapter at a time.
Chapter 1 of 7
1927
Uganda Bookshop is established
On 14 May 1927 Uganda Bookshop was formally established, and became one of the most recognised names in the country's book trade.
From its first years the Bookshop served not only churches and Christian communities but schools, teachers, students, families and readers looking for educational and general books.

Growing with Uganda
As education spread across Uganda, so did the Bookshop. It grew beyond Kampala, with a distribution presence in Masaka, Hoima, Mbale, Gulu, Kabale and Fort Portal.
By the middle of the twentieth century it was an important supplier of textbooks, scholastic materials and Christian literature to schools and communities across the country. Its shelves brought together local and international publishers, and gave Ugandan authors a way to reach readers.

1970s
Resilience through changing times
The decades after independence brought political, economic and commercial change. New competition arrived in the educational book market, and the disruptions of the 1970s cut into international supply chains and the flow of imported books.
The Bookshop adapted. At different points it diversified what it did, while keeping its central purpose: connecting people with knowledge, education and Christian literature.
1977
A home on Colville Street
In 1977 Uganda Bookshop acquired the historic property that became its long-standing home. Today the shop trades from Plot 4 Colville Street, opposite Christ the King Church, an address that has become part of its identity.
The premises form part of Kampala's heritage, reflecting both the architectural history of the city and the longevity of the institution inside them.

Today
The same purpose, now online too
Nearly a hundred years on, we still serve students, schools, teachers, churches, families, professionals and everyday readers: educational books, children's books, Bibles and Christian resources, general books, Ugandan publications, stationery and other learning materials.
Alongside a visit to the shop, customers can now find books online, request titles and have orders delivered beyond our shelves. We remain committed to Ugandan authors and publishers and to a culture of reading.

Approaching one hundred years
On 14 May 2027 Uganda Bookshop turns 100. We look back with gratitude on generations of readers, booksellers, educators, clergy, authors, publishers and families who have been part of the story.
Our history is not only something we keep. It is the foundation for what comes next: connecting people with books, knowledge, faith and ideas that shape lives for generations to come.
