The Thing Around Your Neck

In The Thing Around Your Neck, celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie presents twelve insightful short stories exploring the bonds of family, love, and cultural identity between Nigeria and the United States.

The collection moves between life in Nigeria and the immigrant journey in America. In "A Private Experience", a medical student takes shelter from street violence alongside an unexpected companion, while "Imitation" examines a young mother's suburban life in Philadelphia as complications arise back home in Lagos. In the title story, "The Thing Around Your Neck", a young Nigerian woman confronts isolation, culture shock, and longing far from home.

Touching on themes of womanhood, migration, and personal survival, Adichie balances compassionate observation with sharp realism. This paperback edition published by 4th Estate offers an accessible and rich reading experience for secondary school students, book clubs, and lovers of contemporary African literature.
