About this book

Set along the neighbouring ridges of Makuyu and Kameno during the early period of European colonial influence, The River Between tells the story of a Gikuyu community divided by faith and tradition. As Christian mission work expands, deep divisions arise between villagers embracing the new teachings led by Joshua and those determined to protect ancestral customs and tribal independence.

At the centre of this struggle is Waiyaki, a young leader descended from respected prophets who hopes to bridge the growing divide. Believing that Western schooling can empower his people without destroying their heritage, he devotes his energies to building and running independent schools. However, reconciliation proves precarious as loyalties harden on both sides, forcing the community to confront difficult choices about identity and cultural survival.

This school edition of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's renowned early work remains an essential text for secondary literature classes and general readers interested in classic East African writing.
