Oliver Twist

Oliver Twist is one of Charles Dickens's most enduring and widely read novels. Raised in the harsh confines of a parish workhouse, the young orphan Oliver runs away to London seeking a better life. Instead, he falls into the clutches of an underworld network of juvenile pickpockets directed by the sinister Fagin, testing his innocence against the grim realities of street crime, child labour, and exploitation.

Throughout Oliver's difficult journey, the narrative confronts the severe social conditions endured by poor children in nineteenth-century Britain. While revealing the cruelty of institutions and criminal gangs, the story also follows Oliver's search for decency, kindness, and the hidden truth of his parentage.

Published in the Oxford World's Classics series, this paperback edition offers general readers, secondary school literature pupils, and university students an accessible volume of an essential work in English literature.
